3D Mammography
3D Mammography makes it easier to find breast cancer, earlier. And the earlier you detect breast cancer, the better. Neosho Memorial is proud to offer 3D mammograms in Chanute.
2D mammogram technology is state-of-the art, but it suffers from decreasing sensitivity as tissue density increases. This can result in unclear images and missed cancers, especially in dense breasts.
True Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammograms) helps improve the ability to diagnose potential breast cancer. During the exam, the x-ray tube moves in an arch over the breast taking pictures which are reassembled into a three dimensional view.
Mammograms present challenges for the reading and interpretation of images. A 3D object, like the breast, displayed as a 2D x-ray image, forcibly leads to a loss of image depth information. Super imposition means lesions may be masked by the tissue above or underneath, or normal structures may mimic a lesion. 3D mammography helps reduce these challenges.
At Neosho Memorial, we are proud to offer True Breast Tomosynthesis – 3D Mammography in Chanute. The Foundation of Neosho Memorial granted funds to purchase this new technology. On behalf of our patients, the staff of Neosho Memorial thanks the Foundation and its supporters.
Potential Advantages of 3D Mammography
- Fewer call backs for additional testing.
- 3D mammography shows the inner breast structure more clearly.
- Better detection because thin layers of tissue are shown separately and suspicious lesions from traditional 2D images can be ruled out as benign.
- Improved imaging for dense breast tissue.
What does the term “dense breast tissue” mean?
Breasts are made up of two types of tissue: fibroglandular tissue and fatty tissue. If the amount of fibroglandular tissue is higher than fatty tissue, the woman is said to have “dense” breasts.
